In response to recent allegations, the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has firmly denied reports suggesting that it blocked the Police Service Commission (PSC) from accessing the National Identification Number (NIN) verification database.
In a statement released on Thursday, Dr. Kayode Adegoke, NIMC’s Head of Corporate Communications, clarified that all Nigerian Police formations have uninterrupted access to the NIN verification services. He emphasized that any challenges faced by the PSC in accessing the database are likely due to internal issues within the commission itself, not from NIMC’s end.
“To set the record straight, the NIMC granted verification access to all Nigerian Police formations for the verification of the National Identification Number (NIN). The NPF, PSC, and other security agencies have been enjoying uninterrupted verification services for over five years,” the statement read.
This clarification comes after the PSC’s Chairman, retired Deputy Inspector General of Police Hashimu Argungu, expressed concerns over the commission’s inability to access the NIMC database during a visit to the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC). He appealed for intervention to facilitate access, describing it as crucial for the PSC’s recruitment processes.
NIMC reiterated its commitment to providing reliable verification services to support recruitment, cybercrime control, security mapping, and other official functions. The commission also highlighted its collaborative efforts with the Nigeria Police Force’s ICT department to ensure seamless integration and access to the NIN verification services.
Furthermore, NIMC mentioned that recent structural changes to the verification framework, implemented in consultation with the Office of the National Security Adviser, were aimed at improving standardization and service delivery. The Nigeria Police Force has confirmed that access to the verification services remains uninterrupted.
In conclusion, NIMC urged all partner agencies to adhere to agreed terms and conditions to ensure seamless access to its services and reaffirmed its dedication to supporting national security initiatives through efficient identity verification processes.
